Back Cove - Birding

Portland, Maine

Geese taking a drink
Overall Experience:
I visit Back Cove and the East End Trail on a regular basis, especially in the warmer months. I find it to be a great way to enjoy the outdoors in the middle of Portland. The bird watching is fantastic, especially at low tide. During the summer, there are regular visitors out in the bay off the East End Trail. On September 6, 2000 around 9:30am, I went biking with my binoculars and bird book in hand. I started off at Back Cove, the tide was out, and within minutes, I notice a number of birds on the flats. I pulled my bike over immediately and in the course of the next hour, while biking on Back Cove and the East End, I saw many birds that I never noticed before.
