East End Osprey

Update for Summer 2001! In July, I visited the Osprey family and was privileged to see the entire family hanging on top of and around the train trestle. There were two immature Osprey in the nest both looking healthy with one parent at their side. Down below, another parent kept a watchful eye on the gulls and pigeons that perpetually test their luck with the Osprey. Ospreys exclusively eat live fish.

I am excited to report that there is another family living west of the trestle on top of a small telephone pole at the edge of the train tracks. I have noticed the nest in previous visits, but this is the first time the nest had occupants. This nest is more difficult to see, so I can not report the number of immatures in that nest. Ospreys expand on the same nest year after year. They can become quite large over time. It is wonderful to see healthy birds nesting and thriving.

The East End path is located along the waterfront in Portland, Maine. It is accessible from Commercial Street or from Marginal Way. From Commercial Street to the end of the path where it connects with the Boulevard at Back Bay, is about 2 miles. It is a beautiful path with views of the Bay on one side and the Narrow Gauge Railroad runs on the other. I have seen a number of different species while exploring along this path.
